THE MISSION OF TAKE IT DOWN AMERICA IS NOT JUST TO BRING DOWN CONFEDERATE FLAGS PAID FOR BY OUR TAX DOLLARS.
It is not is not to just bring down confederate monuments erected and maintained by our tax dollars—or end its celebration by government sanctioned holidays and designated “months.” Our mission is to bring down the confederacy because it did not die in 1865, it has only been re-branded, apologized for and given shelter by the United States government. Our mission is to end the fear it has wrought in our elections, our schools, our policing, even in our spiritual lives. We do this with the knowledge that our shared heritage, one of violence and love and heroism and genocide cannot and should not define our future. The mission of Take It Down is to BUILD IT BACK UP AGAIN and by “it” we mean our communities, our nation, with truth and honor and respect to all.
The reach of its violence is beyond skin, age, gender, religious affiliation and sexual identity. It has been called a no-trespassing sign and in this regard it acts as another tool of segregation. There need be no Jim Crow, no Black Codes, no Dred Scott when this flag flies.
Mississippi is the last state with a flag displaying the Confederate battle flag emblem. We deserve a flag that represents all Mississippians.Take it down.
